Love's Executioner

Autor: Irvin D. Yalom

Kuupäev:

Lehekülgede arv:
270

Sisu:
The collection of ten absorbing tales by master psychotherapist Irvin D. Yalom uncovers the mysteries, frustrations, pathos, and humor at the heart of the therapeutic encounter. In recounting his patients' dilemmas, Yalom not only gives us a rare and enthralling glimpse into their personal desires and motivations but also tells us his own story as he struggles to reconcile his all-too human responses with his sensibility as a psychiatrist. Not since Freud has an author done so much to clarify what goes on between a psychotherapist and a patient.

Katkend: "What goes on in another person's mind, someone you never see, who probably isn't even aware of your existence, who is caught up in his own life struggles, doesn't change the person you are."
"Oh, he's aware of my existence, all right. I leave a lot of messages on his telephone-answering tape."

Arvamus: See raamat meeldis mulle.

Nimi:
Oryx and Crake

Autor: Margaret Atwood

Kuupäev:
12.04.2014

Lehekülgede arv: 436

Sisu: Oryx and Crake is at once an unforgettable love story and a compelling vision of the future. Snowman, known as Jimmy before mankind was overwhelmed by a plague, is struggling to survive in a world where he may be the last human, and mourning the loss of his best friend, Crake, and the beautiful and elusive Oryx whom they both loved. In search of answers, Snowman embarks on a journey–with the help of the green-eyed Children of Crake–through the lush wilderness that was so recently a great city, until powerful corporations took mankind on an uncontrolled genetic engineering ride. Margaret Atwood projects us into a near future that is both all too familiar and beyond our imagining.

Katkendid:

Oryx had neither pity for him nor self-pity. She was not unwilling: on the contrary. But she refused to feel what he wanted her to feel.

And like the Crakers she was beautiful, so from a distance she didn't stant out.

Arvamus:
Selles raamatus on Atwood taaskord huvitava post-apocalyptilise maailma loonud.
No Gary Stu. INIMENE.
Veel meeldis Oryx (although don't even get me started with the names in this novel.)
Very Happy

Coraline

Autor: Neil Gaiman

Kuupäev: 13.04.2014

Lehekülgede arv:
162

Sisu: Coraline's often wondered what's behind the locked door in the drawing room. It reveals only a brick wall when she finally opens it, but when she tries again later, a passageway mysteriously appears. Coraline is surprised to find a flat decorated exactly like her own, but strangely different. And when she finds her "other" parents in this alternate world, they are much more interesting despite their creepy black button eyes. When they make it clear, however, that they want to make her theirs forever, Coraline begins a nightmarish game to rescue her real parents and three children imprisoned in a mirror. With only a bored-through stone and an aloof cat to help, Coraline confronts this harrowing task of escaping these monstrous creatures.

Gaiman has delivered a wonderfully chilling novel, subtle yet intense on many levels. The line between pleasant and horrible is often blurred until what's what becomes suddenly clear, and like Coraline, we resist leaving this strange world until we're hooked. Unnerving drawings also cast a dark shadow over the book's eerie atmosphere, which is only heightened by simple, hair-raising text. Coraline is otherworldly storytelling at its best.

Katkendid:

"Nobody sensible believes in ghosts anyways. That's because they're all such liars."

"How do I know you'll keep your word?" asked Coraline.
“I swear it,” said the other mother. “I swear it on my own mother's grave.”
"Does she have a grave?” asked Coraline.
“Oh yes,” said the other mother. “I put her in there myself. And when I found her trying to crawl out, I put her back.”

Arvamus: Mulle meeldib.
Meeldis. :)

Get ready to meet Angela Clark as she flees the world’s worst wedding for a new life…

It's official. Angela Clarke is in love – with the most fabulous city in the world.

Fleeing her cheating boyfriend and clutching little more than a crumpled bridesmaid dress, a pair of Louboutins and her passport, Angela jumps on a plane, destination - NYC.

Holed up in a cute hotel room, Angela gets a New York makeover from her NBFJenny and a whirlwind tour of the city that never sleeps. Before she knows it, Angela is dating two sexy guys. And, best of all, she gets to write about it in her new blog (Carrie Bradshaw eat your heart out). But it's one thing telling readers about your romantic dilemmas, it's another figuring them out for yourself …

Angela has fallen head over heels for the big apple, but does she heart New York more than home?

Katkend:

I was lost for words and overwhelmed by the need to pee. I didn't know what to say.

Arvamus: OEEEEHH.

The Graveyard Book

Autor:
Neil Gaiman

Kuupäev: 15.04.2014

Lehekülgede arv: 327

Sisu:
Nobody Owens, know to his friends as Bod, is a perfectly normal boy. Well, he would be perfectly normal if he didn't live in a graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor the world of the dead.

There are danger and adventures for Bod in the graveyard: The strange and terrible menace of The Sleer; a gravestone entrance to a desert that leads to the city of ghouls; friendship with a witch, and so much more.

But it is in the land of the living that real danger lurks, for it is there that the man Jack lives and he has already killed Bod's family.

A fascinating story of love and friendship realized in the most unlikely of place, this new novel by bestselling author Neil Gaiman, with illustrations by award-winning Chris Riddell, is set to become a classic.

Katkend:

“What’s particle physics?” asked Bod.
Scarlett shrugged. “Well,” she said. “There’s atoms, which is things that is too small to see, that’s what we’re all made of. And there’s things that’s smaller than atoms, and that’s particle physics.”
Bod nodded and decided that Scarlett’s father was probably interested in imaginary things.

“Name the different kinds of people,” said Miss Lupescu. “Now.”
Bod thought for a moment. “The living,” he said. “Er. The dead.” He stopped. Then, “…Cats?” he offered, uncertainly.
“You are ignorant, boy,” said Miss Lupescu. “This is bad. And you are content to be ignorant, which is worse.

“So the people buried in the ground on the other side of the fence are bad people?”
Silas raised one perfect eyebrow. “Mm? Oh, not at all. Let’s see, it’s been a while since I’ve been down that way. But I don’t remember anyone particularly evil. Remember, in days gone by you could be hanged for stealing a shilling. And there are always people who find their lives have become so unsupportable they believe the best thing they could do would be to hasten their transition to another plane of existence.”
“They kill themselves, you mean?” said Bod. He was about eight years old, wide-eyed and inquisitive, and he was not stupid.
“Indeed.”
“Does it work? Are they happier dead?”
“Sometimes. Mostly, no. It’s like the people who believe they’ll be happy if they go and live somewhere else, but who learn it doesn’t work that way. Wherever you go, you take yourself with you. If you see what I mean.”

“Someone killed my mother and my father and my sister.”
“Yes. Someone did.”
“A man?”
“A man.”
“Which means,” said Bod, “you’re asking the wrong question.”
Silas raised an eyebrow. “How so?”
“Well,” said Bod. “If I go outside in the world, the question isn’t ‘who will keep me safe from him?’”
“No?”
“No. It’s ‘who will keep him safe from me?’”

“I think…I said things to Silas. He’ll be angry.”
“If he didn’t care about you, you couldn’t upset him,” was all she said.

“You didn’t kill them?”
“Of course not.” Bod said, “This is my home. Why would I want them hanging around here for the rest of time?”

“I took her memories,” said Silas. “They will return to Glasgow. She has friends there.”
“How could you make her forget me?”
Silas said, “People want to forget the impossible. It makes their world safer.”

Arvamus: Minu lemmik Gaimani raamat siiani.
Hea hea hea!
Kõik tegelased olid huvitavad ja omanäolised. Silas, nõid, Nobody vanemad, Jack... kõik! Super. :)

Sisu: Hopelessly crossed in love, a boy of half-fairy parentage leaves his mundane Victorian-English village on a quest for a fallen star in the magical realm. The star proves to be an attractive woman with a hot temper, who plunges with our hero into adventures featuring witches, the lion and the unicorn, plotting elf-lords, ships that sail the sky, magical transformations, curses whose effects rebound, binding conditions with hidden loopholes and all the rest.

Katkendid: Few of us now have seen the stars as folk saw them then– our cities and towns cast too much light into the night—but, from the village of Wall, the stars were laid out like worlds or like ideas, uncountable as the trees in a forest or the leaves on a tree. Tristan would stare into the darkness of the sky until he thought of nothing at all, and then he would go back to his bed, and sleep like a dead man.

“Victoria,” said Tristran, after a while.
“Yes, Tristran,” said Victoria, who had been preoccupied for much of the walk.
“Would you think it forward of me to kiss you?” asked Tristran.
“Yes,” said Victoria bluntly and coldly. “Very forward.”
“Ah,” said Tristran.

“Marry you?” she repeated, incredulously. “And why ever should I marry you, Tristran Thorn? What could you give me?”
“Give you?” he said. “I would go to India for you, Victoria Forester, and bring you the tusks of elephants, and pearls as big as your thumb, and rubies the size of wren’s eggs.
“I would go to Africa, and bring you diamonds the size of cricket balls. I would find the source of the Nile, and name it after you.
“I would go to America—all the way to San Francisco, to the gold-fields, and I would not come back until I had your weight in gold. Then I would carry it back here, and lay it at your feet.
“I would travel to the distant northlands did you but say the word, and slay the mighty polar bears, and bring you back their hides.”
“I think you were doing quite well,” said Victoria Forester, “until you got to the bit about slaying polar bears. Be that as it may, little shop-boy and farm-boy, I shall not kiss you; neither shall I marry you.”
Tristran’s eyes blazed in the moonlight. “I would travel to far Cathay for you, and bring you a huge junk I would capture from the king of the pirates, laden with jade and silk and opium. “I would go to Australia, at the bottom of the world,” said Tristran, “and bring you. Um.” He ransacked the penny dreadfuls in his head, trying to remember if any of their heroes had visited Australia. “A kangaroo,” he said. “And opals,” he added. He was fairly sure about the opals.

“For a kiss, and the pledge of your hand,” said Tristran, grandiloquently, “I would bring you that fallen star.”
He shivered. His coat was thin, and it was obvious he would not get his kiss, which he found puzzling. The manly heroes of the penny dreadfuls and shilling novels never had these problems getting kissed.
“Go on, then,” said Victoria. “And if you do, I will.”

“Still doesn’t explain… there isn’t anythin’ unusual in your family, is there?”
“My sister, Louisa, can wiggle her ears.”
The little hairy man wiggled his own large, hairy ears, dismissively. “No, that’s not it,” he said. “

“I just want you to know,” said the girl, coldly, “that whoever you are, and whatever you intend with me, I shall give you no aid of any kind, nor shall I assist you, and I shall do whatever is in my power to frustrate your plans and devices.” And then she added, with feeling, “Idiot.”

“I am the most miserable person who ever lived,” he said to the Lord Primus, when they stopped to feed the horses feedbags of damp oats.
“You are young, and in love,” said Primus. “Every young man in your position is the most miserable young man who ever lived.”

“What were you shouting about?” asked Yvaine.
“To let people know we were here,” Tristran told her.
“What people?”
“You never know,” he told her. “Better I should call to people who aren’t there than that people who are there should miss us because I didn’t say anything.”

Have been unavoidably detained by the world.
Expect us when you see us.

Tristran and Yvaine were happy together. Not forever-after, for Time, the thief, eventually takes all things into his dusty storehouse, but they were happy, as these things go, for a long while.

Arvamus: Oh. Järjekordne ilus muinaslugu. Eriti meeldis lõpp. Kuidagi haunting. Kuningriik igavese kuningannaga. Mulle meeldib see idee.
See oli huvitav ja köitev raamat. Tegelased olid mitmekülgsed, well fleshed out ja huvitavad; isegi halvad tegelased. Mulle meeldisid twistid (two Mondays getting together, Tristran's family etc).
Hea. :)

Sisu: Under the streets of London there's a place most people could never even dream of. A city of monsters and saints, murderers and angels, knights in armour and pale girls in black velvet. This is the city of the people who have fallen between the cracks.

Richard Mayhew, a young businessman, is going to find out more than enough about this other London. A single act of kindness catapults him out of his workday existence and into a world that is at once eerily familiar and utterly bizarre. And a strange destiny awaits him down here, beneath his native city: Neverwhere

Katkendid:

“You’ve a good heart,” she told him. “Sometimes that’s enough to see you safe wherever you go.” Then she shook her head. “But mostly, it’s not.”

Richard’s own parents were both dead. His father had died quite suddenly when Richard was still a small boy, of a heart attack. His mother died very slowly after that, and once Richard left home she simply faded away.

“People tell you so much more when they know you’re just about to be dead. And then they talk around you, when you are."

The Rosie Project

Autor: Graeme Simsion

Kuupäev:
19.04.2014

Lehekülgede arv: 329

Sisu: Narrator Don Tillman 39, Melbourne genetics prof and Gregory Peck lookalike, sets a 16-page questionnaire The Wife Project to find a non-smoker, non-drinker ideal match. But Rosie and her Father Project supersede. The spontaneous always-late smoker-drinker wants to find her biological father. She resets his clock, throws off his schedule, and turns his life topsy-turvy.

Katkendid:
‘Kevin’s not a medical student. And he didn’t cheat on his exams, he just got some help with an assignment.’
It seemed that the Dean had been flattering me only in order to procure unethical behaviour. But the solution to her dilemma was obvious. If she did not want to break the rules, then she should change the rules. I pointed this out.

I could now see her. She was wearing a black dress without decoration, thick-soled black boots and vast amounts of silver jewellery on her arms. Her red hair was spiky like some new species of cactus. I have heard the word ‘stunning’ used to describe women, but this was the first time I had actually been stunned by one.

I’m not proficient at dating. There are so many rules to remember.’
‘You’re doing okay,’ she said. ‘Except for staring at my boobs.’
This was disappointing feedback. Rosie’s dress was quite revealing, but I had been working hard to maintain eye contact.

My name is Don Tillman and I am an alcoholic. I formed these words in my head but I did not say them out loud, not because I was drunk (which I was) but because it seemed that if I said them they would be true, and I would have no choice but to follow the rational path which was to stop drinking permanently.

"You want to share a taxi?’ asked Rosie.
It seemed a sensible use of fossil fuel.

"I want to spend my life with you even though it’s totally irrational. And you have short earlobes. Socially and genetically there’s no reason for me to be attracted to you. The only logical conclusion is that I must be in love with you.’

Arvamus:
Stripped of his personality, one could say. Ta ütles Rosiele isegi: "Whatever behavioural modifications you require from me are a trivial price to pay for having you as my partner." Kas tõesti on lõpuks kirjutatud hullem lause kui "Loving someone means never having to say sorry." (v among these lines) Ja "-I’ve eliminated all of the things you didn’t like. Further changes are possible." Puke.

Varastatud aja lõpus

Autor: Peeter Helme

Kuupäev:
22.04.2014

Lehekülgede arv: 160

Sisu:
Võrreldes autori eelnevate romaanidega – «Puudutus» (2007) ja «September» (2009) – on «Varastatud aja lõpus» üllatavalt emotsionaalne teos. Lugu, mida romaanis jutustatakse, on lihtne, aga igavikuline – ühe armastussuhte areng – ja see on kirjeldatud tundlikus romantilises stiilis.

Küsimused, mis romaanis kerkivad ja millele lugeja peab vastust leidma, on sügavalt inimlikud: kuidas tunda ära armastust? Kuidas armastuse emotsionaalse koormaga hakkama saada? Kuidas armastust hoida? Samas on tegemist ülimalt ausa raamatuga, sest meessoost peategelasel on harvaesinevat julgust üles tunnistada oma eksimusi.

Peeter Helme on eesti noorema põlvkonna kirjanik, kes kirjutab kaasaja urbanistlikest noortest, kelle pealtnäha turvaline korrastatud elu varjab kirgi ja änge.

Katkend:

Azaro is a spirit child who is born only to live for a short while before returning to the idyllic world of his spirit companions. Now he has chosen to stay in the world of the living. This is his story.

Katkendid: "Learn to drink, my son. A man must be able to hold his drink because drunkenness is sometimes necessary in this difficult life."

"You women take so lond," Dad said.
"We may be poor, but we're not ugly," Mum said.

When I awoke, Dad was still asleep. He slept with his suffering still on his face.

And because the photographer hadnät been there to record what had happened that night, nothing of the events appeared in newspapers. It was as if the events were never real. They assumed the status of rumor.

Arvamus:
Ühe Aafrika vaese küla elu kirjeldus, ja kogu Azaro elu kirjeldus, oli lihtsalt... it wore me down. It's not that bad.

Olemise talumatu kergus

Autor: Milan Kundera

Kuupäev: 30.04.2014

Lehekülgede arv: 190

Sisu: «Olemise talumatu kergus» on raamat armastusest, kodumaatusest, Vene okupatsioonist, lääne naivismist, õhtumaa kultuuri allakäigust ja paljust muustki. Kundera on suutnud teha kõige raskemat: tabada aega.

Sabrina ütleb: "See on nõiaring. Inimesed kurtuvad, kuna muusikat lastakse aina valjemini. Kuna nad aga kurtuvad, siis ei jää neil muud üle, kui lasta seda kõlada veelgi valjemini."

Jah, see on surm: Tereza magab, näeb kohutavaid unenägusid ja Toma¹ ei suuda teda äratada.

Arvamus: Wow. Lihtsalt wow.
Ma sukeldusin sellesse raamatusse ilma mingisuguste eeldusteta. ma laenutasin ta üldse lihtsalt sp, et pealkiri jäi ette ja... let's give it a try.
See on ilusasti kirjutatud raamat. Omal moel isegi hingetukstegev. See viis, kuidas Kundera ühendab filosoofia ja suudab kinni püüda elu ilu, isegi kui see elu pole kuigi elus ja kaugelt ideaalist, on maagiline. Ma hoolisin kõikidest tegelastest, elasin neile kaasa ja mõistsin neid. See sissevaade tegelastesse oli hästi teostatud. Elu ja suhted on ilusad (isegi segased elu ja suhted).
Usun, et see on raamat, mida peaks vähemalt kord elus lugema.

More than fifty years on, Iris Chase is remembering Laura's mysterious death. And so begins an extraordinary and compelling story of two sisters and their secrets. Set against a panoramic backdrop of twentieth-century history, The Blind Assassin is an epic tale of memory, intrigue and betrayal...

Katkendid:
The only way you can write the truth is to assume that what you set down will never be read. Not by any other person, and not even by yourself at some later date. Otherwise you begin excusing yourself.

It was only three weeks after this that Aimee fell down the stairs. I mourned her, of course. She was my daughter. But I have to admit I mourned the self she could have become; I mourned her lost possibilities. More than anything, I mourned my own failures.

Arvamus: Järjekordne hea raamat Atwoodi sulest. Meeldis jälle eludest lugeda ja meeldis väga see twist lõpus (Aimee ja The Blind Assassin kohta).

The Imperfectionists

Autor: Tom Rachman

Kuupäev: 6.05.2014

Lehekülgede arv: 281

Sisu: Set against the gorgeous backdrop of Rome, Tom Rachman’s wry, vibrant debut follows the topsy-turvy private lives of the reporters, editors, and executives of an international English language newspaper as they struggle to keep it—and themselves—afloat.

Fifty years and many changes have ensued since the paper was founded by an enigmatic millionaire, and now, amid the stained carpeting and dingy office furniture, the staff’s personal dramas seem far more important than the daily headlines. Kathleen, the imperious editor in chief, is smarting from a betrayal in her open marriage; Arthur, the lazy obituary writer, is transformed by a personal tragedy; Abby, the embattled financial officer, discovers that her job cuts and her love life are intertwined in a most unexpected way. Out in the field, a veteran Paris freelancer goes to desperate lengths for his next byline, while the new Cairo stringer is mercilessly manipulated by an outrageous war correspondent with an outsize ego. And in the shadows is the isolated young publisher who pays more attention to his prized basset hound, Schopenhauer, than to the fate of his family’s quirky newspaper.

As the era of print news gives way to the Internet age and this imperfect crew stumbles toward an uncertain future, the paper’s rich history is revealed, including the surprising truth about its founder’s intentions.

Katkendid:
"Could you zing me an email?"
"Can't. problem with my computer." The problem is that he doesn't own one.

"Did a year abroad in Milan, which is where I met my husband. Not currently my husband. My ex. Though he wasn't that then. I never know how to say that."
"Allow my copydesk expertise to interwene: your then pre-husband, later-to-be-post-husband in his prior-to-ex-husband status."
She laughed. "Is that how you'd phrase it in the paper?"
"Now you see why they fired me."

Arvamus: Meeldis!

Cat's Eye

Autor: Margaret Atwood

Kuupäev: 07.05.2014

Lehekülgede arv: 498

Sisu: Controversial painter Elaine Risley returns from Vancouver for a retrospective of her work. Here, in Toronto, the city of her youth, she confronts the submerged layers of her past – her unconventional family, her eccentric and brilliant brother, the self-righteous Mrs. Smeath, and the two men Elaine later came to love in diverse and sometimes disastrous ways. But it is the enigmatic Cordelia, once her tormentor, then her best friend, whose elusive yet powerful presence in her life Elaine finally comes to understand. The realm of childhood and growing up, with its secrecies, cruelties, betrayals, and terrors, has never been so brilliantly evoked. By turns disquieting, humorous, compassionate, haunting and mordant, Cat’s Eye is vintage Atwood.

Katkendid:
There aren't very many male teachers anyway, and the few that do exist are elderly; there are no young men, because the war has eaten them.

An eye for an eye leads only to more blindness.

"Why do you paint?" she says, and I can hea her again as clear as anything. I hear her exasperation, with me and my refusals.
"Why does anyyone do anything?" I say.

Arvamus:
Mulle meeldib eludest ja minevikust lugeda. Ja Atwood kirjutab just neist asjadest.
Vot see ongi ahvatlev.

The End of overating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite

Autor: David A. Kessler

Kuupäev: 9.05.2014

Lehekülgede arv: 320

Sisu: Most of us know what it feels like to fall under the spell of food—when one slice of pizza turns into half a pie, or a handful of chips leads to an empty bag. But it’s harder to understand why we can't seem to stop eating—even when we know better. When we want so badly to say "no," why do we continue to reach for food? Dr. David Kessler, the dynamic former FDA commissioner who reinvented the food label and tackled the tobacco industry, now reveals how the food industry has hijacked the brains of millions of Americans. The result? America’s number-one public health issue.

Dr. Kessler cracks the code of overeating by explaining how our bodies and minds are changed when we consume foods that contain sugar, fat, and salt. Food manufacturers create products by manipulating these ingredients to stimulate our appetites, setting in motion a cycle of desire and consumption that ends with a nation of overeaters. The End of Overeating explains for the first time why it is exceptionally difficult to resist certain foods and why it’s so easy to overindulge.

Dr. Kessler met with top scientists, physicians, and food industry insiders. The End of Overeating uncovers the shocking facts about how we lost control over our eating habits—and how we can get it back. Dr. Kessler presents groundbreaking research, along with what is sure to be a controversial view inside the industry that continues to feed a nation of overeaters—from popular brand manufacturers to advertisers, chain restaurants, and fast food franchises. For the millions of people struggling with weight as well as for those of us who simply don't understand why we can't seem to stop eating our favorite foods, Dr. Kessler’s cutting-edge investigation offers new insights and helpful tools to help us find a solution.

There has never been a more thorough, compelling, or in-depth analysis of why we eat the way we do.

Katkendid: A cue triggers a dopamine-fueled urge... dopamine leads us to food... eating food leads to opioid release... and the production of both dopamine and opioids stimulates further eating.

Alcoholics Anonymous tells alcoholics that they're not to blame for their disease-but that they must take responsibility for their behavior. It acknowledges their vulnerability to the power of alcohol, yet refuses to accept that as an excuse for drinking.

Arvamus: Ja kogu see raamat on üks suur kordus kordus kordus nendest kahest lõigust pmst. Et mida rohkem me tarbime suhkruid, rasvu ja soola, seda rohkem me sööme, yadda-yadda-yadda. Ja ülejäänud pool raamatust oli mingi kordav pep-talk, et you are not at fault but you can do it.

The Year of the Flood

Autor: Margaret Atwood

Kuupäev: 09.05.2014

Lehekülgede arv:
518

Sisu:
The long-awaited new novel from Margaret Atwood. "The Year of the Flood" is a dystopic masterpiece and a testament to her visionary power.
The times and species have been changing at a rapid rate, and the social compact is wearing as thin as environmental stability. Adam One, the kindly leader of the God's Gardeners--a religion devoted to the melding of science and religion, as well as the preservation of all plant and animal life--has long predicted a natural disaster that will alter Earth as we know it. Now it has occurred, obliterating most human life. Two women have survived: Ren, a young trapeze dancer locked inside the high-end sex club Scales and Tails, and Toby, a God's Gardener barricaded inside a luxurious spa where many of the treatments are edible.
Have others survived? Ren's bioartist friend Amanda? Zeb, her eco-fighter stepfather? Her onetime lover, Jimmy? Or the murderous Painballers, survivors of the mutual-elimination Painball prison? Not to mention the shadowy, corrupt policing force of the ruling powers . . .
Meanwhile, gene-spliced life forms are proliferating: the lion/lamb blends, the Mo'hair sheep with human hair, the pigs with human brain tissue. As Adam One and his intrepid hemp-clad band make their way through this strange new world, Ren and Toby will have to decide on their next move. They can't stay locked away . . .
By turns dark, tender, violent, thoughtful, and uneasily hilarious, "The Year of the Flood" is Atwood at her most brilliant and inventive.

Katkendid:
When the Waterless Waters arise, Adam One used to say, the people will try to save themselves from drowning. They will clutch at any straw. Be sure you are not that straw, my Friends, for if you are clutched or even touched, you too will drown.

Adam One said they should take a moment of silence and put Light around Burt in their hearts, and Zeb said they'd already put so much light around him the guy was probably burning like a suicide bomber in the fried-chicken franchise.

Arvamus:
So... enamus sellest raamatust meeldis.

Samarkandi amulett

Autor: Jonathan Stroud

Vastu tahtmist saadetakse Bartimaeus ennekuulmatult halastamatu ja auahne vanemvõluri Simon Lovelace’i käest varastama kurikuulsat Samarkandi amuletti.
Ta elab koos abikaasaga St Albansis Hertfordshire’is.
“Samarkandi amulett” on üle maailma saanud kiitva vastuvõtu osaliseks ning tõlgitud juba kolmekümne kuude keelde.

Katkendid: Üürgama ei hakanud ühtki maagilist alarmi, kuid pea lõin ma küll oma viis korda kivi vastu ära.1
1 Viis erinevat korda, viie erineva kivi vastu. Mitte viis korda ühe ja sama kivi vastu. Lihtsalt, et oleks selge. Inimesed on mõnikord nii juhmid.

Osutasin oma kivikuju küünisega rinnal rippuva amuleti peale. See säras ja sätendas küünalde värelevas valguses. "Samarkandi amulett. See oli Simon Lovelace'i oma. Nüüd on see sinu. Varsti on ta jälle Simon Lovelace'i."

These characters have sass. Eriti palju muidugi Bartimaeus.

Worse yet, she has the crazy feeling that she's being eaten. Marian ought to feel consumed with passion, but she really just feels...consumed. A brilliant and powerful work rich in irony and metaphor, The Edible Woman is an unforgettable masterpiece by a true master of contemporary literary fiction.

Fast Food Nation

Autor: Eric Schlosser

Kuupäev: 14.05.2014

Lehekülgede arv: 399

Sisu:
Are we what we eat? To a degree both engrossing and alarming, the story of fast food is the story of postwar Amerca. Though created by a handful of mavericks, the fast food industry has triggered the homogenization of our society. Fast food has hastened the malling of our landscape, widened the chasm between rich and poor, fueled an epidemic of obesity, and propelled the juggernaut of American cultural imperialism abroad. That's a lengthy list of charges, but Eric Schlosser makes them stick with an artful mix of first-rate reportage, wry wit, and careful reasoning. Schlosser's myth-shattering survey stretches from the California subdivisions where the business was born to the industrial corridor along the New Jersey Turnpike where many of fast food's flavors are concocted. He hangs out with the teenagers who make the restaurants run and communes with those unlucky enough to hold America's most dangerous job -- meatpacker. He travels to Las Vegas for a giddily surreal franchisers' convention where Mikhail Gorbachev delivers the keynote address. He even ventures to England and Germany to clock the rate at which those countries are becoming fast food nations. Along the way, Schlosser unearths a trove of fascinating, unsettling truths -- from the unholy alliance between fast food and Hollywood to the seismic changes the industry has wrought in food production, popular culture, and even real estate. He also uncovers the fast food chains' efforts to reel in the youngest, most susceptible consumers even while they hone their institutionalized exploitation of teenagers and minorities. Schlosser then turns a critical eye toward the hot topic of globalization -- a phenomenon launched by fast food. FAST FOOD NATION is a groundbreaking work of investigation and cultural history that may change the way America thinks about the way it eats.

Arvamus: See oli väga huvitav raamat. Ja inimesed on ikka nii lollid!
Täiesti kohutav, mis müügitulemuste saavutamiseks ikka tehakse. Jällegi oleks huvitav lugeda selletaolisest uuringust Euroopas/Eestis toimuva kohta.

Sisu:
The beginning of an all new epic fantasy series by international bestseller, Trudi Canavan.

In a world where an industrial revolution is powered by magic, Tyen, a student of archaeology, unearths a sentient book called Vella. Once a young sorcerer-bookbinder, Vella was transformed into a useful tool by one of the greatest sorcerers of history. Since then she has been collecting information, including a vital clue to the disaster Tyen's world faces.

Elsewhere, in an land ruled by the priests, Rielle the dyer's daughter has been taught that to use magic is to steal from the Angels. Yet she knows she has a talent for it, and that there is a corrupter in the city willing to teach her how to use it -- should she dare to risk the Angels' wrath.

But not everything is as Tyen and Rielle have been raised to believe. Not the nature of magic, nor the laws of their lands... and not even the people they trust.

Katkendid:
She was a woman, he reminded himself. e ought to follow the etiquette heäd been raised to follow. Though talking to women could be fiendishly tricky, even when following all the rules about manners.

Forgive me for being blunt about it, but his book, or any of his tools, could be designed for evil purposes. Are you one such tool?
I was not designed so, but that does not mean I could not be used so. A tool is only as evil as the hand that uses it.

"You are..." he stopped abruptly, stepped back and examined her. "Not beautiful but pleasing. Well-proportioned. Tall enough to give your limbs some grace yet not too thin. Your face..." - he moved closer, staring at her intently - "...is interesting. Not a classic shape but... unique. Rewarding to those who take the time to look again."

It had taken a tiny shift in awareness to sense the something rather than the nothing.

"If you felt for me as I do for you there would be no decision to make."

Arvamus:
So... I am in love with Canavan all over again. Üldiselt oli see vist set up Angel of Stormsile, mida ma lihtsalt ei jõua ära oodata!

Sisu: ‘I’ll tell you what happened because it will be a good way to introduce my brother. His name’s Simon. I think you’re going to like him. I really do. But in a couple of pages he’ll be dead. And he was never the same after that.’

There are books you can’t stop reading, which keep you up all night.

There are books which let us into the hidden parts of life and make them vividly real.

There are books which, because of the sheer skill with which every word is chosen, linger in your mind for days.

The Shock of the Fall is all of these books.

The Shock of the Fall is an extraordinary portrait of one man’s descent into mental illness. It is a brave and groundbreaking novel from one of the most exciting new voices in fiction.

Katkendid:
I should say that I am not a nice person. Sometimes I try to be, but often I'm not. So when it was my turn to cover the eyes and count to a hundred - I cheated.

But you notice it when he isn't there any more. You notice so many of the places where he isn't, and you hear so many of the things he doesn't say.

I should tell you about my mum, because you probably have never met her.

Arvamus: Well.

Sisu: The adventures of Azaro, the spirit child, continue in this radiant sequel to The Famished Road.

Katkendid: "Africa is the home of the world, and look at how we live in this world."

"You don't like us."
"I don't know you."

"Who was that?" dad asked, after a particular neighbor had gone.
I told him.
"I never knew how ugly he was till I couldn't see him," dad said.

"Your story isn't going anywhere," mum said, in the dark.
"A story is not a car," dad replied. "It's a road."

They followed him, marvelling at a man so blind - and so fragile, as forces in the universe go - who could muster so much rage when it was easier to lie down and die.

Arvamus: Okei. Esimene raamat meeldis kohe väga palju rohkem.

Kas tead, kust on pärit iidne võitluskunst taekwondo? Kus asub maailma parim lennujaam?

Korea ajaloo alguseks peetakse aastat 2333 e.m.a, mil müütiline pooljumalik valitseja Dangun olevat rajanud muistse Korea riigi.

Sisu: In this dazzling and long-awaited conclusion to the acclaimed Mortal Instruments series, Clary and her friends fight the greatest evil they have ever faced: Clary's own brother.

Sebastian Morgenstern is on the move, systematically turning Shadowhunter against Shadowhunter. Bearing the Infernal Cup, he transforms Shadowhunters into creatures out of nightmare, tearing apart families and lovers as the ranks of his Endarkened army swell.

The embattled Shadowhunters withdraw to Idris - but not even the famed demon towers of Alicante can keep Sebastian at bay. And with the Nephilim trapped in Idris, who will guard the world against demons?

When one of the greatest betrayals the Nephilim have ever known is revealed, Clary, Jace, Isabelle, Simon, and Alec must flee - even if their journey takes them deep into the demon realms, where no Shadowhunter has set foot before, and from which no human being has ever returned...

Love will be sacrificed and lives lost in the terrible battle for the fate of the word in the thrilling final installment of the classic urban fantasy series The Mortal Instruments!

Katkendid: Ty looked at him blankly. He knew what "I love you" meant, and he knew it was good, but he didn't understand why it was an explanation to anything.

"You think that they are kind, that the Nephilim are kind, because they are good, but goodness is not kindness."

"You'd think, with all your obsession with goodness, that one of you would be willing to give up the other for a greater cause. But no. Love is essentially selfish, and so are both of you."

Arvamus: Oeh. Raamat jättis paljugi soovida, nt kirjutaminegi: kohatud võrdlused-naljad nagu "Luje-blue eyes" ja "I wouldn't trust her further than I would throw a medium-sized elephant" - kuidas keskmise suurusega elevandid siia puutuvad?! Või kasvõi basic English: "...came Jocelyn; she showed by Amatis..." - kus on "was"? Oeh.
